Sir John Sherry started TWT in 1986 with only two pairs of ducks. These beautiful creatures soon captured his heart and he decided to create a waterfowl sanctuary second to none, and now wish to share this pastime with other enthusiasts and stimulate an awareness of the importance of wetlands and waterfowl. Dame Marie deserves a special mention as she was ever present on the farm whilst Sir John was travelling on business trips all over the world.

Sir John was knighted at an investiture of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem in Malta in November 1998.

TWT is maintained by a team of 2 Apprentice Curators and 16 Caretakers.
